Reaching out to the community

The things that matter most to us are the same things that matter to our patients, staff and associates – like being an active member of the community we live and work in. Every day staff at SV&MHS take our mission beyond its walls and into the community to those vulnerable and in need.

We are involved in a diverse range of activities that reflect our core values, and desire to make a difference in people’s lives.

Here's a sample of some of our community programs:

  • St Vincent’s Hospital’s Community Outreach Program - outreach assessment and treatment services for the homeless and treats the highest proportion of rural patients of any teaching facility in NSW
  • St Josephs Pets of Older Persons (POOPS) – a partnership with RSCPA NSW the program provides veterinary assistance, emergency boarding and Pets-As- Therapy Program
  • COMET (Community Outreach Medical Emergency Team) Funded entirely by donations, COMET targets disadvantaged people, particularly the homeless, with acute medical problems that can be managed outside the hospital.

Stewardship and Social Accountability
Whilst responding to the poor and marginalised in our community is one of the most visible expressions of our mission, we also exercise our committment to the common good by advocating for changes in health policy and representing the disadvantaged in our society through various forums of influence and debate.

This has been expressed through our care of those living with mental illness and our partnership with government in ensuring that we not only care for the immediacy of their needs but also advocate for long-term change which might improve the lives and experience of those who suffer in our community.
