How three senior social workers upgraded their skills

Supported by St Vincent’s Hospital, Francis Duffy, Ann Grealis and Brett Haddon are among the first to graduate from a new degree program, Master of Social Work in Counselling, at the University of NSW.

The course focuses on counselling by social workers and provides a framework for family sensitive counselling, practice and research. The course content matched the work contexts for each of the three senior social workers at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Asked about the experience of upgrading their skills, Ann said “throughout the two years of study we had the opportunity to reflect on our counselling practice and to consider how to be most effective and helpful with particular client groups, without losing sight of the uniqueness of the individual. However, no matter how much you study, the most important qualities in the counselling relationship are trust and genuineness.” Brett added, “this degree has enabled me to consolidate my years of professional counselling practice and has cemented my belief in the need for free and professional counselling services.”

Frances Taylor, Manager of Social Work, congratulated all three and emphasised the value of senior social workers increasing their qualifications and skills.

Ann and Brett work with the General Counselling Service of St Vincent’s Community Health Service and Francis works in Aged Care and Aged Care Rehabilitation. Notwithstanding their enjoyment of the course, all three are relieved to have their evenings and weekends free of study commitments.

St Vincent’s Hospital provided all three social workers with study leave throughout the two year course.
